The way music affects our brain is a crazy concept, and the way music makes us feel is even stranger. The fact that chords and the way a set of words are sung can make us feel anything other than what we are. It has the ability to take you to another place without actually going anywhere.

“When I listen to music, I get lost in it and it makes me forget about the world,” said junior Marissa Bergstedt.

At cerebromente.org, they state, “A little known fact about Albert Einstein is that when he was young he did extremely poor in school. His grade school teachers told his parents to take him out of school because he was ‘too stupid to learn.’ His mother did not think that Albert was ‘stupid.’”

His parents bought him a violin, and he excelled at it. Music was the key that helped Albert Einstein become one of the smartest men of all time.

Einstein worked through his problems by playing the violin.

“Music helps close the world out, leaves me in my own little bubble. When my headphones are in, everybody stays out,” said senior Freddy Navarro.

Stanford University School of Medicine did an experiment to see how music and the brain is able to “sort out the chaotic world around it.”

“Music is my escape. It might be for problems or just anything. Music excites or comforts and it is there for you when no one else is,” said junior Jeremy Gross.

According to med.stanford.edu, the peak brain activity occurred during a short period of silence between musical movements – when seemingly nothing was happening. It was the brains way of anticipating the rest of the song.

“I just use music to fit my mood, whatever I’m feeling, it amplifies it,” said senior Edin Ilmic.

Netdoctor.co.uk posted on their website, “A 2011 Canadian study, published in Nature Neuroscience, has shown that plugging in to your favorite music could help melt away a bad mood.”

“It makes you feel pumped up, and it influences your mood,” said junior Shailin Heckard.

Netdoctor.co.uk also stated, “Researchers at McGill University in Montreal showed that listening to pleasurable music of any description induced ‘music chills’, which triggered the release of the feel-good chemical, dopamine.”

“I have a workout playlist, and a playlist when I’m sad. On my way to drumline competition, I listen to really exciting music,” said sophomore Courtlyn Cripe.

Music influences many in several ways, both good and bad. It affects the way the brain works, people’s moods, and the overall happiness of an individual. It helps relieve stress and has the ability to induce sadness. Whether one is down in the dumps or on top of the world, music can help amplify emotions. So turn it up!
